When a chemical process called polymerization of chloroprene is done a product called neoprene is produced. It is a very versatile product that is used in a wide variety of applications from wet suits, laptop sleeves and medical to medical and electrical applications. It was invented by the DuPont Corporation in 1930; hence it is a registered trademark belonging to them.

Because of its chemical inertness and stability it also has a wide range of industrial use. That is why it is used in the making of gaskets, hoses, electrical insulation, and also as protective clothing against chemicals. It also has higher fire resistant qualities than natural rubber. Hence it is used in materials that need to be highly fire resistant like fire doors and certain type of gloves.
